I really enjoyed your article in the newsletter and had a question for you. I also am about your age (78) and like to travel alone for the same reasons you do. Once a year my husband comes on one of the tamer trips but I like to do adventure travel on my own. I will pass 200 countries this December.
My questions are:
1) You mentioned a good travel agency you used in Sudan and area. I usually go on my own but I don't think I'd feel safe there without a guide. Can you tell me who it is please? I haven't been to those 6 or 7 countries but have been all around them.
2) In the message above, you're wanting to travel to the Pacific Islands. You've probably already done that by now but I have only been to about 10 and am not getting any younger! Do you know of a way to maximize visiting a lot of them? I usually stay at least 4 days each place but there may not be time for that here and it is hard to get to and from many of them. So are there a few island hop tours, agents, freighters or other ways to maximize these?
Coincidentally, I also traveled a lot during the pandemic. . . no tourists, easy travel! Loved it! Also, I go back to Switzerland whenever possible! My grandmother was from your area and another was from just north in Colmar when it was Alsace-Lorraine. I like to take the postal buses up into the hills and then walk - sometimes peek into barns at the cows with their tails tied up!
Also, is there an area you are wanting to get a small group together to go see? I'll be teaching in Colombia in November and seeing the Guyanas and next year will tour thru the 'Stans but would love to go into Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and Iraq while I'm there, if you have any hints for guides. Thank you for any advice. Nice to meet a kindred traveler!
