Update: We did this hike on 22 April and it was magnificent. Once you climb to the starting point you get what's pretty much the iconic view of the great wall. We saw the same vista depicted at least twice in paintings hanging in hotels.
Fair warning, the extreme elevation changes and crazy amount of steps and ramps at the Mutianyu end will wreak havoc on your ankles, knees and quads. You'll use muscles you usually don't!
I have not done that one, I have done Jinshanling to Simatai. There are companies that run groups, to do independently you would need to arrange a car and not pay anything until you are picked up at the other end.
