Batam Indonesia

Going to be in Singapore for only a few days in December of this year, 2013

Thinking of "new for me" places nearby

Indonesia is very close (been to Malaysia)

Already spent time in Bali (Lesser Sundra)

and

Jojakarta, on the island of Java

There is a short ferry ride from Singapore to the Island of Batam

Cannot figure out if this would be a new TCC destination but would like to know

Does anyone know to which of the 5 Indonesian destinations Batam belongs

Thanks

  • I don't have been to Batam, Indonesia. I'm not sure but I have visited Bali, Indonesia! Since that question was dated 12 years ago; I would say that Bali has significantly changed. More and more people visit Bali, Indonesia! Plus, everything is right close to the hotel and very accessible! So awesome!

  • Yes, we had a few days in Kiev back in April.  The Maidan was sobering indeed: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/296111744223407761/

  • We did the ferry trip on Christmas Day, 2013 and there was no problem getting a visa at the ferry terminal. Seems Christmas is also a holiday in Indonesia. Went to a beach park (had to pay to enter) with local families out swimming and picnicking, playing music and having a holiday.

We were in Kiev earlier this week, August 4, 5 & 6 and were lucky in that we were "between demonstrations". Sad what is going on in the Ukraine. One can feel the tension is the air and see it on peoples faces.

  • For what it's worth, Emily and I did that ferry ride and it was a fun day trip.  You need a visa on arrival, or at least did in 2011 when we went.

  • Thanks Jack, I hope there's no more countries added at the next meeting ! Saying that I've been to Phuket already :)

I received a repy back from Sanford Smith who is the TCC Secretary and just knows lots of things since he was instumental in putting the list together. His repy:

    Jack,

Batam currently counts as Sumatra, however, we will be discussing at the December board meeting whether to recognize the Riau Archipelago as a separate entity to itself.  My inclination is no but it still will continue to count as Sumatra.  Phuket Island is also on the table to count as a separate entity, similar to Cheju Island or Hainan Island, and that one has a better chance of passing muster.

  • I wondered the same myself as I went there earlier this year. I reckon its Sumatra.
