Hi fellow travellers,
On 21 August 2013 I'll travel for five weeks to Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Does anyone has tips about interesting places to see or to go to (besides the Victoria Falls because that's high on my list already) in those countries?
Best regards,
Wouter

Yes, we saw just about everything we expected to and then some.
We had heard that the price for gorilla tracking licenses in Uganda had been temporarily cut in half because of a dramatic downturn in tourism due to the ebola scare.
Great picture! Good to hear that you had a great time in Africa. And after the Maasai Mara there is no need for a 2nd day in Chobe. 12 days safari is quite a lot, I assume you've seen enough animals? I'm planning a trip to Rwanda and combine that probably with a visit to the mountain gorilla's in Democratic Republic of Congo.
Safe travels!
Kind regards, Wouter
We didn't have time for 2-days in Chobe, but it was great. Loved the river safari as it was different than others we'd been on.
The first part of our trip was in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania so we did a 12 day safari there. We saw lots of lions (and had them walk right in front of our tent at night), plus a particularly nice leopard experience in Maasai Mara. Our guide was a ninja at finding wildlife. Here's the best picture of her we took, I think:
Hi Scot,
If you have the time, then go for a two day safari in Chobe. Then you've a better chance to see lions and leopards. I attach a picture of a leopard; I've never been to close to a leopards and I did quite a few safaris in my life.

That all sounds amazing, Wouter. We'll be hitting Victoria Falls and doing a day trip to Chobe Nat'l Park in Botswana, but that's the extent of Zimbabwe...at least for this time 'round. Now you've got my intrigued by Great Zimbabwe.
Hi Scot,
My trip in Zimbabwe was not that long. I went to the Victoria Falls, but I'm sure you won't miss them. From the Victoria Falls I took a night train (be prepared for many hours delay) to Bulawayo. From Bulawayo I went to Masvingo where you can see Great Zimbabwe. Great Zimbabwe is the 2nd biggest archeological site after the Pyramides in Egypte and quite interesting. After Masvingo I went to Harare the Capital and flew out from there.
Enjoy your stay in Zimbabwe!
Thanks for this, guys. We're headed to this part of the world in October so your posts are valuable to us. Cheers!
Hi Craig,
Thanks for your advice and tips! I've been to Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe already last year August and September and combined it with two days Chobe National Park. I don't like the Mugabe regime either and besides Victoria Falls there are no tourists at all but the local people are very friendly and it was nice to have a conversation with them. But you better skip the subject politics with them! In Mozambique I went also to Mozambique Island in the North and took a train from Nampula close to the border of Malawi, which was a great train ride with also no tourists at all. All together I was there 5 weeks and I had a great time!
Kind regards,
Wouter
As for Phils reply to the police stopping you in Mozambique having you pay a bribe, here's the thing to do. Insist that YOU DO GO TO THE STATION, THEN INSIST ON A RECEIPT. The policeman wants to stick the money in his pocket then tell them you need their name so you can report the so called incident to the Embassy there. Any reason your country doesn't have an embassy tell them about one in a neighboring country. Tell them what they're doing is discouraging tourism to the area hurting the economy of the city/nation.They usually back off just be confident in your voice yet keep cool.
I boycott going to Zimbabwe until Robert Mugabe is overthrown out of power. In Victoria Falls the Zambian Side is more impressive . Make sure you don't go during the rainy season July-Sept as it is hard to navigate around the falls that time of year. Spectacular site. You might even consider whisking trhu Zimbabwe to Botswana visiting Chobe National Park it's only about a two hour drive from Livingstone Zambia. In Mozambique I went overland from Swaziland to Maputo which is an somewhat developing old city trying to become cosmopolitan. It is a poor country that is still fairly new to tourism after many years of civil war after independence in 1975. A good little resort area near Maputo is a small city called "Xai Xai" (pronounced Shy Shy) good beach areas around there not many people with palm fringed shores of the Indian Ocean. The roads aren't in the best of shape either so allow extra time.
