CANADIAN ARCTIC (SOUTHERN NUNAVUT)1st part : The area covered here is Baffin Island, Hudson Strait, Ungava Bay and the northern islands of Hudson Bay, lying South of Nunavut Territory, the homeland of the Inuit people. Nunavut was born on April 1st, 1999, when it was carved from the NWT (Northwest Territories). Nunavut is very large, with a size equivalent to Western Europe, but with no more than 80 000 inhabitants.Exploration of this area by Europeans started in the 19th century in connection with the search for the Northwest Passage. It was a very difficult task and lots of explorers such as Hudson met their death there.
