With the coming Virtual Explorations related to Azores also Senegal has been mentioned.

It would, of course, be of interest to combine my (second) visit to Azores with some other places, but there doesn't seem to be any flights to any countries in West Africa, without getting back to at least Paris, meaning the flight time would be at least 10 hours to Senegal or Sierra Leone I might personally be more interested in.

I was wondering if some one knows better - as Senegal has been included in the Virtual Explorations?

The only decent connections I could think of is to fly from Azores to Canary Islands from where you could with a short direct flight visit Nouakchott in Mauritania or Dakhla in West Africa - at least these connections existed a few years back.

But if someone has investigated this more I'd love to hear about the findings,

Br,

Pirkko

  • Wow...sounds like it's hard to fly around West Africa at reasonable price. Yikess.....Ghana and Senegal are enough to experience West Africa. If you do Benin as well, that's a big bonus!

  • We used this when visiting Nouakchott, Mauretania. Good connection from Las Palmas.

Use Binter Air from the Canaries to local islands, Madeira, and the African continent. It's not listed on the major search places and I found it quite good this past summer.

  • I flew to Ponta Delgardo on Air Acores from the Cape Verde Islands. I flew to Cape Verde (Praia) on Air Maroc from Guinea-Bissau.

  • Hi All. A great tool for planning: www.flightsfrom.com. Allows to see all direct flights from any airport.

  • There is also the possibility of going via Cape Verde. Flights to or from Cape Verde from Ponta Delgada on Azores Air. If you haven't been there it could be a stopping point on the way to other areas in Africa. Easy to get connections on Senegal air from there or via Morocco.

I heard tale of a flight before to Sao Tome but I cannot find one now it may not have started again since Covid.

  • Thank you all of you for the replies. However I have been in Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau and Togo (and Ivory Coast and Benin), so I was looking for Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea or maybe Nigeria, but from Europe probably it is not feasible to add anything to Azores but to keep them separate.

  • Pirkko,

Sherri Donovan has also just done a Virtual Exploration on Senegal a few days ago, as well as Steve Owad-Jones on the Azores, and Gina Morelli on Portugal (outside Lisbon and Porto).  These presentations should be posted to the site next weekend.  We of the NY Chapter are also running a Study Tour to Senegal March 6 - 10, 2024.  The invitation and announcement should be out within two days.

  • Pirkko, here is a link to a PDF of SATA Azores Airlines map.  Scroll down below the map to find a list of partners (Star Alliance plus many others I wouldn't have thought of) in small type. You might find this helpful. You might also email Sherri Donovan who keeps a house in Senegal. sherri@sherridonovan.com

    From Cathy Shelton...

PS It was great to meet in Malta!  Hope to see you in the Azores!

  • That connection via Lisabon or Porto is rather quick.
There are really good prices for flights from Portugal to West Africa with TAP (Almost always flight from Porto cost 10-20% less then from Lisabon).

From Ponta Delgada there are direct flights to Praia on Cape Verde.
From Praia are connections to Dakar, Bissau, Lome.

For shorter trip - Ponta Delgada is connected directly with Madeira. (But often is cheaper to fly via Lisabon / Porto)
