Syria

While in Jordon in the fall I am considering this as a means to get to Syria. Seek a visa in Amman. I understand that Visa’s are not available at the Nassib Border Crossing. Given a visa the plan would be to cross at the Jaber & Nassib Border Crossings. From there I would like to do a short visit to Nassib, Om Elmiathin and El Taebah. But the security situation makes it inadvisable to just try to hop on a taxi at the crossing and come back. That is, something should be arranged. Thoughts from TCC members?

  • This is excellent.

My original intent was to enter at the Nassib Border crossing with Jordan. The area around the crossing was held by rebels up until a few months ago. This included Saida, El Taebah and Om elmiathin near the border.

Given what you outlined the only way to meet all the Syrian requirements is to find an agent which would meet me at the border, tour these cities and return to the border. I have no idea how to find such a person, however.

Thanks for describing the valuable experience.

  • Syria was 3rd from last of my UN countries I have now completed the list, so this is from the horses mouth.

You can not get a visa from outside Syria or fly in ,or get one at the border.

You have to be invited in by a government appointed agent, you tell him your dates of entry and departure, send him a Photostat copy of your passport,he will then book your hotel in say Damascus, he then has to come out off Syria (the best place for him to pick you up is Beirut airport as he did with us ) then drive you across Lebanon ,across Syria to Damascus he will have your letter of invite to present at the border ,you pay in US$ I think it was 60! he will take you to many places around the city in the days you are there, He is totally responsible for you all the time you are in Syria . He will then take you back to Beirut airport for your journey home, He will quote you the cost when you apply to him. Mohamed is very trustworthy he takes international news crews for there reports .

I hope this is helpful as we were told by the every one we met this is the only way in.

PS I have been to Somalia before but not Mogadishu in 2 weeks I am going there I will then put a report on there

  • Visas are not available in Amman or at the borders with Jordan. The Syrian Embassy in Beirut issues visas to Lebanese Citizens or Foreigners with Resident/Work/Student Visas residing in Lebanon. The border post at Masnaa (El Fssaikh) could issue Syrian Visas on Arrival  yet contacted someone whom is  a US.Citizen that is a TCC Member as well told me they're not issuing Tourist Visas. Other visas the ''importance must be proven to outweigh its weight in gold.''  I went to Damascus Syria in 2001 going the way mentioned. It's just 25 KM from Masnaa to Old Damascus. Note: I joked with a taxi driver in Amman, told him ''take me to Damascus.'' His reply was ''not even for a million dinars will I do that.''
