State of Emergency in Trinidad

The government of Trinidad announced  a state of emergency on Tuesday due to gang related drug violence and 11 innocent bystangersa being caught in cross fire. There is a curfew in effect from 9 PM to 5 AM. Some flights are being cancelled and cruise ships are diverting. Tobago is safe. Was supposed to fly there yesterday but my meetings have been cancelled and am now in Barbados. Trini govt. says doesn't know how long this state of emergency will remain in effect.

  • I was in Trinidad and Tobago last September.  Port of Spain is not a place to wander at night.  Spent one very quite night on the upper western coast so can't speak for the rest of the island.  Tobago has a much nicer feeling to it.  I'd go back to Tobago but not the Port of Spain area of Trinidad.

  • Hi Karin,

Tobago was totally safe when we were there in December.  Loved it!  THe people were so nice!  Surprised to hear that Trinidad is so different with the violence and such.  What is causing that?  The country has so much oil money.  Seems crazy that they can't keep crime under control.
