i went to Somailand via Dijoubti and no visa I had no problem on arrival the so called Visa office in Addis is not always opened the formalities was all about money at the airport and i paid ! I had a flight booked to Mogadishu and no Visa again It would have ben handled with CASH! but the flight was cancelled and U ddint want t wait 3 days for th next flight so i went to Saudi Arabia instead. got a transit visa for it!
The russian Pilot that flies from Dubai to Somalia told me that it was no big deal being there no one bothers him..
I probably would've done the routing of visiting Somaliland when I was in Ethiopia. I did the route from Addis Ababa to Harar with a visit to Awash National Park. Dire Dawa is just a modern sprawling city near Harar . In my case visas to Somaliland can only be issued at their sole embassy in Addis Ababa. My problem was I had to get a Djibouti Visa along with trying to get an Ethiopian Visa in Djibouti as my Ethiopian Visa was obtained on arrival at Bole Intl. Addis Ababa. the only place they are issued upon arrival, yes they are single entry .You can't obtain them by land borders. It was a matter of time along with obtaining visas that would cost me several days of getting around. A lot of places won't accept photocopies if traveling around the country even with letter from Embassy stating they have your passport.
Rick, welcome to the club. We've had this website up for barely a year, and we're trying to encourage people to use it. Thanks for posting!
The two airlines I used to/from Djibouti to Hargeisa were Jubba Airways and Daallo. I don't think you can book either one on the Internet. I did it in Djibouti without any problem. You just trot back and forth between the offices to get their schedules and buy tickets. Supposedly, Ethiopian Airlines has resumed flights to Somaliland, but I don't know if that's to Hargeisa or Berbera. The airport in Hargeisa was closed last year for construction, so you might check to see if it's reopened. They're probably lengthening the runway to take bigger planes.
The planes I took to/from Hargeisa were old Soviet relics. Another one on Jubba, from Djibouti/Mogadishu/Wazzir/Nairobi turned out to be a really nice 737. Go figure.
You can overland into Hargeisa from Ethiopia via Harar. Lots of people do that.
I'd just show up and figure it out once you get there.
This is wonderful. I'm a new TCC member and have struggled for years to find good sources of reliable information. You can't imagine how great this is. :-)
What airlines fly into Hargeisa? I can't find anything on the internet about flights in/out. I'd like to look into the overland drive in from Djibouti and a plane to Addis Ababa. I have a nephew with Navy SEALs who is trying to dig up some unclassified intel for me. If I get anything I'll post it.
When I was in Hargeisa a few years ago I met a former French paratrooper who now does private security consulting for corporations. He had overlanded down from Djibouti to check out security for a company and said it was a rough trip, but doable. He hired his own 4x4s and drivers. He didn't overland back though; he flew.
I imagine you can ask around in Djibouti, where drivers would know how safe it is now to drive.
Flying would be much cheaper.
The caves you're thinking about is Las Geel. They're fantastic. Any hotel you stay at in Hargeisa can set up the guard, driver, and car--no problem.
I found no issues in Hargeisa. The hotel gets you a soldier for 20 USD per day to go with you if you go outside centre of town. I did as flew from the airport on the coast. Felt safe. I flew via DJbouti. That kidnapping message has been there for years.

Get a double-entry visa for Ethiopia before you leave home to save the hassle and keep your options open once you're over there.

No I flew in and to be honest that would be safer.
David
Much appreciated. That's both positive and very helpful. Would like to visit the caves outside of town. $20 for an SPU is cheap money well spent.
Lonely Planet describes hooking up with 4x4's that make the drive from Djibouti to Hargeisa. Know anything about this?
Rick
