My wife and I would like to travel on s safari in South Africa. Can anyone recommend some good safari companies? Also, what time of year is best to travel there? Thanks for your help!

I'm sure my good friend Semwano at PekuPeku travel in Capetown, SA could set you up on a custom safari itinerary. She has booked wonderful trips for me to Tanzania, Zanzibar, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
We had our travel agent coordinate our trip so I can't recommend a tour operator - I don't recall who she might have used for the pieces- but we stayed at a wonderful place in South Africa called Thornybush. All the best, Lisa D. Taylor
No, we do not used any travel agency. We rented car from Sani rent a car in Johannesburg. Booking of accomodation inside of Kruger (or any other South African NP) should be done on https://www.sanparks.org/ as soon as possible. All it's is really easy.
There is highway a whole way from Johannesburg to the Park.
Big advantage of South Africa is that you can do self drive safari with rented 2WD.
We are just back from SA. We done Kruger NP. 3 days is more then enough.
We have seen in 3 days all Big 5. Some 10 lions, around 500 elefants, thousands of zebras and a many thousands of antilopes.
Similarly great self drive safari (in 2WD) is in Etosha in Namibia.
Best time to travel there is SA winter = summer in Europe/ US. In that time forest is dry, animals are near rivers and much better visible.
(We have done safaris is some 10 countries in Africa already, but in these two - Kruger and Etosha - we have seen much more animals then in other countries.)

Thanks, Jiri. I'm a little wary of self driving. Did you use any travel agency at all? If so, can you recommend them?
