Midway Island 2012

Like Iwo Jima and Wake Island - Midway is another TCC 'country' that's hard to reach.

Military Historical Tours MHT is pretty much the only tour company with the necessary interest and contacts to arrange trips to these locations.

They have a trip to Midway Island planned for Monday 4 June 2012 as part of the 70th anniversary commemoration.

There's a full six day tour option but I suspect most TCC members will be interested in the 'day only' option for the flight from Honolulu and back plus events on Midway.  You could fly into HNL on the 3rd and out on the 5th.

Two days after the Midway trip is the Transit of Venus - a rare astronomical event that will be visible from Hawaii.  But that's a whole other subject ...

As usual I'm not selling on behalf of MHT -- just letting TCC members know.  In fact some TCC'ers have misgivings about the poor communication of MHT (see the Wake Island thread ) but despite their singular attitude to communication, in the end they are a reputable company.

As with Wake Island, the trip will only go ahead if there's sufficient numbers so I'd urge any TCC members interested in Iwo Jima, Wake or Midway Island trips to contact MHT and make a booking.

You may like to post a note on this or the Wake Island thread if you've booked so TCC members can keep in touch about developments.

Cheers,

  • Returned a few months ago from a tour on WW II Pacific Islands Battlefield sites, including Iwo Jima on 24 March. The Japanese Govt. only permits a visit one day a year for a Ceremony and to go to the top of Mt  Suribachi. Tour groups that participated, and each person has to be a member of the Iwo Jima Assn. of America, included Military Historical Tours, Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours the WW II History Museum (New Orleans) and an obscure company that had six members--WW II Museum Tour is is expensive. Some of the tours for 2019 are already filled. The groups that went to Iwo Jima included five Iwo Jima veterans and families and members of the tour groups. Traveled from Guam on two UA Boeing 737 800/900 aircraft charter flights, and a total of a little less than 300 people. Trip was worthwhile, but not enough time on the island. Traveled to Wake and Midway islands when in the Army in the mid-1950s.

  • Apologies -- the Transit of Venus is on Tuesday 5th June 2012 - the day after the Midway trip.

You'd think that after 40 years of travelling I'd have mastered the whole International Date Line thing <sigh>.
