Hope you are all well ... at home!

Strange times we are all living. Many of us are at home, hoping to be soon on the road! So here are my two questions to you, ma dear fellow members:

  • Are you doing all right?
  • In your wildest dream, what would be your next destination, the one you really hope you'll visit soon?

  • In 2009, I did a RTW by surface, which included Amtrak, Trans Mongolia, & Trans Siberia trains (among others). But the most memorable segment was the 17-day crossing of the Pacific on a container vessel. Absolutely great. Cheers.

  • Yes, I would love to compare notes.  I am waiting until the Covid dust settles to see what parts are left.  I fear what may have disappeared from the array of connection options.

I am just getting around to reading "The Great Railway Bazarar" by Paul Theroux.  I am only about four decades away from this being good guidance on what would now work.  At any rate, he took trains, and some boats, from London to Japan, and back, during the 1970s.  Given the covid travel restrictions, I thought it was a good time as any to pick up this old book.    It only is serving to cause me to embark on a RTW by surface, even more.

Like JoAnn Schwartz said in May, my ultimate dream trip is to go around the world on the surface.  However, I would route through the Northern Hemisphere.  I live in the US, so with that as a starting point, across Canada by train, cruise up through the inside passage to Alaska, --not sure of how to get between Alaska and any point in Asia--, trans Siberia RR from east to west, then a series of trains to connect through Europe and up to the UK, Cunnard from the UK to NYC.  Over the years, from time to time, I have pieced together the points, with the Trans Pacific always being the challenge and attempting to link an itinerary up with a positioning cruise when such happen.  From time to time, I was able to figure out all land routes.  Not sure of late, especially after covid may substantially rearrange our options.

  • We are doing OK. Just returned from our home in Florida.  Today is Liberation day, we can leave our property.  We had hoped to see Egypt and Jordan this year, a reschedule of our 2020 trip but things don't look good for a late fall return, yet. I just want to get in an airplane and go somewhere.  Cheers to all of you

  • I am doing well, thx. Hope that everyone else is doing likewise. As far as destinations, my no. 1 goal for this year continues to be Central Asia. The 5 Stans, from one end to the other. Still doesn't look good, so the alternative is the Eastern Balkans + Moldova. Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania & Moldova are my 4 last countries left to visit in Europe. Cheers.

  • My ultimate dream trip would be to the Moon(and back).

  • That sounds so interesting and fun! I'll check out the Darwin to Adelaide route too. Hopefully we will all be back traveling and exploring the world soon!

    JoAnn,

We took the train across Australia from Sydney to Perth in 2008 and truly enjoyed it. We'd like to go back and take the train from Darwin to Adelaide.

There are so many amazing places for us to go once the world opens up. Hopefully, sooner than later.

My dream list is getting longer and longer as we all have plenty of time now to make plans.  :-D

An around-the-world trip all on the surface (no planes)

Take the train journey across Australia. While in the area make a special side trip to Whitehaven Beach.

Visit islands in the South Pacific I've not yet seen, especially Lord Howe Island.

Francois - what are your dream next destinations?

Hope others share some of their dream trips too!

  • Thank you for your replies.

We live in a strange new world. And unfortunately it seems it might last as we know now this thing is not seasonal (contrarily to the previous corona viruses). And while you might, as I do, miss the smell of the kerosene, the main priority is of course to stay safe!

    Enjoy your Summer anyway
