Hi All , I am off to Sudan and Eritrea in September 2011..
So happy to help with any red tape issues or general questions.
I used my points on Lufthansa to fly to Asmara.
Got visa in London for Eritrea but took 3 weeks as needed to be referred to Asmara.
Cost £25.
Sudan visa required a interview at the Embassy in London. They took copy of my passport and Hotel booking and Invitation. I was at the Embassy 4 months before I was going. The interview went something like:
Hi Mr Langan, you from Ireland, Dublin yes? .. Yes
How is the weather ? Raining today when I left..
How is the weather tomorrow,, I believe it will rain..
And the next day,, I believe the same.. Why do you ask?
Oh, I am going to Dublin myself tonight and wondered how the weather is?
Ok visa approved.. You can get two months before you travel, Visa will be issued same day..

that is very odd to learn that you are not permitted outside the capital of Asmara I went by private car to the Red Sea town that is somewhat of a resort to that country driving over the mountains and a baboon chased my car.
I spent the day and no one questioned me about my presence.. in fact at the hotel I met a man from England who was writing a report on the country as he worked for a travel agency he told me all about the places he visisted. Lots of Bird watching is all I can recall from that convo!
For a trip in 2013 to Sudan I was able to get a visa on arrival - though it was all prearranged and I had to have proof of the waiting visa before boarding the flight to Khartoum. Going through Raidan Travel, a Sudanese travel agency, they took care of all the arrangements and also the follow-up travel and photo permits after I arrived. Very easy.
I was there two years ago. It has not changed. The only rule changed is that it takes 7 days to get a permit to travel outside Asmara. I have been all over Africa. It was by far the safest place I was in. You can see no army or police as they are all plane clothes. They are all very honest. Great Italian food. Trust me when you go , you will be amazed.. Send me a email. langandavid@gmail.com
I have a link to photos from that trip I will send you.
I also have a postcard blog. It is not up to date as I only started in two weeks ago.

Do you have any current info on Eritrea? I read there was a possible coup attempt in January that didn't amout to much but left a lot of civilan discontent unresolved. Anyone know if its safe to travel there?
