Equatorial Guinea

There is a company advertising its services on the Internet called visitguineaecuatorial.com (also called Ruta 47 EG) who state they can arrange travel to all of the country, including Annobon and Corisco islands. Does anyone have experience ith this company? Are they trustworthy? Any feedback is appreciated.

  • Hi Everyone,

My next trip plan is to visit Equatorial Guinea, leaving just before Christmas. I would need to be back in Australia about January 20, and want to spend a week in northern Italy (likely base Milan) and San Marino on the way back. Has anyone solo backpacked EG? I prefer to travel independently and catch public transport with the locals, but am wondering if they key sites and national parks on both the island and mainland are accessible by a combination of public transport and locally booked day trips (there don't appear to be a great number of roads in the country :)). I speak Spanish. Also, how long would I need to put aside to see the country properly? There was a good article about it in the Centurian I found, but seeking more details and information.

I would be looking to combine it with another country/countries in the region, with one of them ideally Sao Tome. Is Gabon worth it / not too expensive to get around?

    Any recommendations welcome!

  • I was in Malabo for a week in 1983 right after Macias was overthrown and it was the longest week of my life.  I had to charter a plane from Douala, Cameroon.  I doubt you will have any problems today, as they are moving the capital to Ciudad de la Paz on the mainland.  Enjoy...

  • I also had my flight canceled to Annabon while I was there.....not a problem if you have time and not confined by return flights and the huge airline penalties for any changes.

Is there an industry which is less consumer friendly than airlines?

BTW....hidden gem in EG are the gorillas on the island...problem is that there are no facilities and an expedition would have to be put together....RUTA could do it....if I were younger it would be a perfect adventure....most people now see them in Rwanda which is great but has a slight Disneyland quality to it. Gabon and Cameroon are other opportunities..

anyone who has not sat ten feet away from the gentle giants is missing one of the penultimate wildlife experiences.

  • CEIBA if you can find a way online or an agent to ticket them, can help connect the dots on a schedule. I flew out of EG to Sao Tome on them. The schedule changed by a day two weeks out and I had to re-do my trip, though. Ruta 47 is the local agency many travelers use to book them.

  • royal air maroc is not a reliable airline...have had flights canceled on me at last minute twice

  • Hi Brett,

Welcome to the forum! I flew to Equatorial Guinea from Europe on Lufthansa. Air France, and off the top of my head Iberia and Royal Air Maroc do too. Book early because the price definitely goes up. No visa required for US passports, but they'll ask for a Yellow Fever certificate at the airport. Since it's not cheap to get to this part of Africa, a lot of travelers overland into Bata on a larger trip.

Equatorial Guinea is on my list for sure. Especially since US citizens don't need a visa and I read it's a nightmare for everyone else. What's the best way to get there from the US?

  • I was there last summer. I had e-mailed Ruta 47 beforehand, but never got a reply. As mentioned, it is a clean and safe country--just follow the rules. Buying an airline ticket there and the functionality of the airports and airlines is still like something from the early 70s.

  • just returned from there...used Ruta 47. It is run by a Spanish guy....very, very good service but it is Eq Guinea so my flight to Annobon was canceled the night before I was to leave.  Eq Guinea is the cleanest and safest country in black Africa. Malabo has some very surprising things to see which were built in the last 7 years. But still odd; for instance since they had a foreign invasion by sea by some mercenaries X years back, NO fishing boats are allowed at Malobo.....it is an island and no organized fishing...just canoe types.

  • yes  steve . i used recently ruta47. the guy is a spaniard living in Malabo . Very good and effecient
