Add on a country while visiting Hawaii

I am traveling to Hawaii (Maui and the Big Island/Kona) this June and since we are traveling so far I would like to add on a side trip to visit another country.  As such I was wondering if anyone had ever visited any additional countries in the general wide area.  Kiribati and Tuvalu seem to be the closest, but I am not sure if they are easily accessible via flights.  I would consider Samoa or Tonga as long as the flights were not crazy.  Thanks for any recommendations you can share.

  • If you do take the island hopper, it's a much better deal to do it with United miles if you can.

Thanks Jo Ann.  This is greatly appreciated.  I'll do a little digging on flight connections site and see what my options are for Guam.

  • Sorry I am a little late in responding, I just saw this post.  It was 2017 when I did this, so I don't know if it is still the same.  Hawaiian Airlines had two roundtrips a week to Pago Pago, American Samoa, leaving Honolulu about 5:00 pm, arriving around midnight. If you just wanted to visit to check the box off for American Samoa, you could easily get back on the return flight to Honolulu about an hour later. I chose to stay in Pago Pago for 3-4 days so I could also visit the National Park there. It also was very easy for me to take a 20-minute flight day trip to Samoa and check that one off also. You need to be careful about visiting on Sunday, as everything shuts down in both Samoa's.  I planned my trip so that I flew from American Samoa on their Sunday morning, crossing the international date line and arriving in Samoa on their Monday. Returning that evening, the next day was Monday in American Samoa.  I hired a taxi driver at the airport in Apia for a reasonable fare and just asked him to show me the island and get me back to my plane on time.

    Good Luck
