Since we can't travel yet I'm doing a lot of planning. I'm mapping out 4 weeks in Japan and 2 weeks in South Korea. I'd love to hear your experiences.
What are the must do's?
What are the off the beaten track things you have done and seen?
Any places you stayed that you would recommend?
Thank you, Merry Jo

Thank you all for the replies.
Hi JoAnn
I lived in Seoul from 1972-1975 so got to both the DMZ and to Jeju Island a couple of times.

If you haven't been to North Korea, or even if you have, you might like the DMZ tour. It has been quite a while since I went but at the time it was organized through the USO in Seoul. Don't forget that Jeju Island is a separate TCC territory if you are interested and can fit it in.
Must do: Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara
Recommend Highly: Japanese alps (specifically Nagano, Matsumoto, Kamikochi), Kanezawa, Hiroshima. Nagano
Things to see: thatched roof houses (Shirakawago), castles, Monasteries (Daihonzan Eiheiji), Big Buddha statue (Kamakura), Kabuki Theatre in tokyo for an hour,
Sumo match, Senso-ji Temple Tokyo
Off the beaten path: Mt Koya (stay in a Buddhist monastery), Shikoku Island (visit some of the 88 Temples of the
O-henro Pilgrimage, hike part or all of the Old Tokaido road between Tokyo and Kyoto
Excellent places to stay: There are excellent places everywhere. Some of our favorites are...
Wanosato Ryokan outside Takayama
Shiraume Ryokan Kyoto
Setouchi Aonagi Hotel, outside Matsuyama, Shikoku
Hope you find these interesting
